Roadtrip USA: Gaffney, SC (What a Peach!)

[ad#adsense:horiz/no outline]
For all you non Carolinian’s, there is a great tribute to the sweetness of the South on exit 90, off Interstate 85 in Gaffney, SC (approx 30 miles before Spartanburg). No, it isn’t Nanna’s house of marmalade (but what a great idea!) It is a huge SC peach painted on a water tower. How ingenious!

Question: Why is the large peach there?

  1. Gaffney has a large peach festival every year?
  2. Gaffney needed their own ‘ Hollywood’ sign tourist attraction?
  3. The people of Gaffney are just too darn cute for their own good?

If you choose 1,2, or 3, you are correct!!!!

Besides Gaffney and the Giant Peach (get the reference?), this little hamlet is also known for a famous American past time: shopping! Yes, this little exit has got itself an outlet mall. Not to be outdone, Gaffney has also entered the 21st century and sports a Starbucks. So you can spend your hard earned benjamins while you are amped up on legal stimulants after you have sampled a local peach!

<Roadtrip USA 2010 update> More to come as I made my made down I-85 to Columbus, GA.

Travel safe – make sure to stop and smell the roses. And whatever you do, never ever throw your napkin on top of your plate in a Thai restaurant…

This is great Megan. I have to work in Gaffney from time to time. The peach is definitely their crown jewel, as the rest of the county is a wasteland!
