The Outer Banks is known for many things: first place a plane was flown, great kite flying, fishing, kayaking, sand boarding, surfing, etc. Not so known are the strategically placed flying horses, or Pegasus in front of businesses from Nags Head all the way to Corolla. There must be over 20 of them. Word has it via the locals that these were originally brought in to raise money for charities by a business buying one, decorating it and then reselling them. Thus every horse is an artistic expression of whatever business bought it.
Why a flying horse? Flying, because this area is known for being first in flight. Horses, because up in norther Corolla there are still native wild mustangs roaming the beaches. Duhhhhh!!!
Check out some of the ones spotted around Nags Head, Kitty Hawk and Kill Devil Hills.
