Montanita: Ecuador Surfer’s Paradise

3 hours NW of Guayaquil along La Routa del Sol (the Sun Road) nestled between sleepy fishing towns and a mountain sits the surf town of Montanita (little mountain). All can be had in this little enclave of Pacific bliss: water sports, Spanish schools, cheap Internet and even cheaper comida (food).

The bohemian town hosts locals and travelers alike and has been spot lighted on the South American backpacking route as a ‘must-see’ destination. Don’t be surprised if when you arrive you can see only the hordes of backpackers in the streets. They add a definite charm to this town.

Accommodations are reasonable here, going for super basic $5 a night to super lux, $20 a night. Always ask to see the room before paying for the night and don’t forget to ask if hot water is available and actually exists. Internet is about $1.25 an hour and several places have skype up and running for those calls home. Meals are about $2-5 depending where you dine, local or gringo friendly.

The beach is the best reason for seeing this village en el mar (on the sea). They are nice, white, smooth beaches and the Montanita streets spill into them. The waves are not enormous (or weren’t when I was there), but they are decent enough to spend your days in the surf and your nights at the bars. Let the good times ensue.
