Ha Long Bay: Enter the Dragon

Ha Long Bay, sweet Ha Long Bay. Ha Long mean ‘Bay of the Descending Dragon’ and each limestone island jutting from the murkey water is conspires to be the fire-breathers scaly back. This UNESCO World Heritage Site has all the makings of an Alfred Hitchock movie, mystery, suspense, surprise, awe and maybe death*(read warning below) but sadly no Jimmy Stewart.

Best way to see this natural wonder is by a junk boat tour. Ha Noi has lots of reputable companies that sell tours. I used Kangaroo Cafe in Ha Noi and highly recommend them. The trip lasts 1 night/2 days and is well worth the money. Stops include a tour of a cavern adorned with cute penguin trash cans and a small beach with about 500 stairs leading up to a Pagoda for excellent picture taking.

*WARNING: A Junk trip can be the best and worst way to see this magnificence but beware of the diesel fumes that seem to waft up from the Stalin era engines. Spending the night in this environment can quite possibly give you eternal slumber.
