Around the World Travel. Part 11 (Selling Off Your Life)

Posted on 10 October 2009 by megancriley

When you realize you are less than a couple months away from departure, your nerves start kicking in. It’s one thing to sell your car or house, but when you decide to downsize all your worldly possessions into a few boxes, emotions can start running high.

The local charity has seen an uptick on donations from me and there is much more to go. What do I keep? What do I donate? And what do I sell? And there is no better way to sell your life than to have a yard sale. You never really quite understand what you own until you start creating a yard sale inventory….man, I have over 10 winter coats!!

So, in 2 weeks, I host a yard sale to bid adieu to all my stuff. Things I thought I could never part with, will be getting a $2 sticker on them. It is not until we start shedding off this layer of us, do we realize that you don’t NEED half of it, you simply WANT it. I love my Global stainless steel knives, but I don’t need to keep them. I adore my glass candlestick holders from Pottery Barn, but I don’t need them.

There is a certain liberation that comes from loosening the materialistic grip they have had on me for awhile. But who is to say that one day in the future I won’t need this stuff again, but this is a blog post for another day.

**Plus, having a yard sale is a great way to earn some last minute cash for your trip, who knows I could rake in enough to buy my first plane ticket!**

[UPDATE: As of Feb 2010, I have not left but plans for RTW travel are set for May 2010]

[...] RTW Travel You Say. Part 11 (Selling Off Your Life) was my last entry and indeed, I did have my yard sale and sold a bunch of crap and a bunch of things not so crappy. In my haste to shed it all, I probably let a couple needed items make their way into the homes of strangers. But, what’s done is done and I did make $120. [...]
